Working from home isn't working? Do you need a home office extension or a better layout?

4/19/2024

Working from home should make life easier.

But if your home isn't set up for it, it can start to affect much more than you expect.

You might notice it in small ways at first:
  • you're struggling to focus or get started
  • you feel constantly interrupted
  • your work spills into evenings and weekends

But over time, it can go deeper than that.

It can affect:
  • your confidence in your work
  • your motivation and ability to get things done
  • your health and wellbeing
  • how you show up in meetings or on video calls

And when your home and work life are happening in the same space, it can become harder to separate the two at all.

At that point, many people start asking:

"Do we need to extend the house to create a proper home office?"

Sometimes the answer is yes.

But often, there's a more important question to ask first.

It's not just about adding a home office

After redundancy in 2008, I started working from home.

I went from a busy office environment to sitting alone at my kitchen table, trying to build a business.

It wasn't just inconvenient, it affected how I worked.

I felt:
  • distracted
  • unmotivated
  • unable to properly switch off

At the time, I thought I just needed a better setup.

But over time, I realised:

The problem wasn't just the workspace. It was how my home was arranged as a whole.

Why your home layout matters more than you think

This is something I now see with many homeowners.

Particularly when:
  • one or both people work from home
  • children are older and using the house differently
  • the home no longer reflects how daily life actually works

People often assume they need more space.

But in many cases, the real issues are:
  • poor flow between rooms
  • lack of separation between work and home life
  • underused or "dead" spaces
  • layouts that no longer suit the household

So even if you extend your home, the problems can remain.

Signs your home office problem isn't just about space

You might recognise some of this:
  • You're working in shared spaces like the kitchen or dining table
  • You have space, but it doesn't function well
  • You can't properly switch off from work
  • You feel distracted or interrupted throughout the day
  • You're considering a home extension but feel unsure what you actually need

But it doesn't always show up in obvious ways.

How it often shows up day to day

When your home isn't supporting the way you work, the impact can take different forms.

You might notice:
  • your space doesn't feel inspiring or easy to focus in
  • you feel self-conscious about your surroundings on video calls
  • you experience aches and pains from your setup
  • you find yourself sitting for long periods without moving
  • work and home life feel blurred together, with no clear end to the day
  • you're frequently interrupted or struggling to find quiet space

These can feel like separate issues.

But often, they all point to the same underlying problem:

Your home isn't currently set up to support the way you live and work.

If that sounds familiar, the issue may not be how much space you have, but how it's being used.

Before you extend your home, ask these questions.

Before committing to a home office extension, it's worth stepping back.

Ask yourself:
  • What's actually not working about our home right now?
  • Is it a lack of space, or a layout problem?
  • Which areas feel most frustrating day to day?
  • Could reconfiguring existing space solve this?
  • What do we really need from our home to support work and family life?

Getting clear on this first can save time, money and costly mistakes.

Extension vs Reconfiguration. What's right for you?

In some cases, extending your home to create a dedicated office is the right solution.

But in others, a better outcome comes from:
  • rethinking how existing rooms are used
  • improving flow and connections between spaces
  • creating clearer boundaries between work and home life

The best approach depends on your home, your lifestyle, and what you're trying to achieve.

If you're starting to question whether you actually need more space, or whether your home could work better as it is, I've written more about this here:

Do you really need an extension?

Good design starts with clarity

The most successful home design projects don't start with drawings.

They start with understanding:
  • how you want to live
  • what's currently not working
  • what will make the biggest difference to your daily life

From there, the right design solution becomes much clearer.

Not sure whether you need an extension or not?

Not sure whether you need an extension, a reconfiguration, or something else entirely?

Before making any big decisions, it helps to understand what to consider and what questions to ask.

The free Q&A is a good place to start.

You'll get access to a short workshop introducing my approach to home design, along with a growing library of real questions from homeowners and practical answers based on real projects.

Final thought

Working from home isn't just about having a desk or a separate room.

It's about whether your home is designed to support the way you live now.

And when that's right, everything else becomes easier.

    Before you design

Most home projects begin with design.
But the real value comes from getting clear before you begin.
